On 29 February 2024, the European Parliament adopted the revision of the eIDAS Regulation (910/2014), one of the most important pieces of legislation in Europe when it comes to digital identity.

The European Commission first proposed three years ago that citizens should have control over their own data. That vision has now been officially recognized. The revisions to the eIDAS 2.0 proposal have been approved, creating a unified framework for digital identity services across Europe. A key innovation in eIDAS 2.0 is the introduction of the Digital ID Wallet. This wallet brings all of our digital login credentials together in one app on our phones, marking a major shift in how we use and manage digital identity across the EU.

As a citizen, you will be able to decide for yourself what data you share, when, and with whom. The information collected about you by the government can be stored digitally in your personal wallet, and you control how it’s used. In just a few years, we may be saying goodbye to traditional usernames and password combinations. Instead, one highly secure app on your phone could become your go-to login for everything, from government services to banks, utility providers, and major online retailers.

For service providers, the introduction of eIDAS 2.0 and the Digital ID Wallet means they need to be ready to accept this new way of identification and access. Their systems and processes must be updated to ensure they’re compatible with digital ID wallets. This isn’t just a requirement, but it’s a real opportunity to enhance service delivery, boost customer satisfaction, and strengthen the security of online transactions. Service providers who respond quickly and effectively to this shift will be leading the way in the digital future.

In summary, the EU’s formal recognition of the Digital ID Wallet marks a major step toward a safer and more seamless digital future for all European citizens. EU member states now have 24 months to roll out their digital wallets — a move that will undoubtedly transform the way we interact online.
