The PMO: The key connector in project management

Managing a successful project, whether small or large, requires direction, coordination, and a strong focus on results. A key role in providing structure, insight, assurance, and connection is played by the Project Management Officer (PMO). From my own experience, truly effective project management and real project success rely heavily on leveraging the expertise and support a PMO brings. While direction, coordination, and results are primarily externally focused and often fall under the responsibility of the project manager, the PMO can make a valuable contribution here too, offering hands-on support and strategic advice. By managing the internally focused aspects, such as structure, visibility, assurance, and team alignment, the PMO helps ensure that the project runs smoothly and efficiently, increasing the likelihood of success.

The many responsibility of a successful project manager

Managing projects is a challenging task, as project managers increasingly face tight deadlines and limited resources. The project manager is responsible for managing both external and internal project factors, while also having a solid grasp of the project’s content and subject matter. This requires a combination of organizational and specialist skills, which aren’t always easy to find in a single person. With high expectations placed on the project manager, it’s essential to provide the right support, including adding expert knowledge to the team where needed. That’s what enables smooth execution and leads to successful project delivery.

Optimal project management through complementary skills

At Davinci, we’ve seen firsthand how project managers are often expected to juggle multiple roles and personas in order to successfully complete a project. To meet this challenge, we’ve chosen to strengthen the project management role by pairing each project manager with a PMO, someone with proven competencies who ensures structured execution. This way, the project manager can fully focus on managing external stakeholders and bearing final responsibility, while the PMO drives day-to-day project operations forward. Each role brings its own strengths and skills, and together they create the perfect balance for a successful outcome. We’re proud to take this approach, because it helps our projects run better, and delivers real value to our clients!
